Food Pantry

Qualifications and Need

January 2016 Update…In 2015, the Food Pantry gave away over 80,000 pounds of food! This doesn’t even include paper and cleaning products our clients receive. An average of 77 families were served at each opening.

There is growing need in our community for those struggling to provide for themselves and their families. The PGO Food Pantry serves upper James City and all of New Kent counties. Open since July of 2009, the number of families served has grown from a few to over 60 families each opening. We serve families living slightly above and below the poverty lines. We also provide food to families and individuals who have lost their jobs, are seasonally employed, or need assistance during these times of hardship. Everyone who comes receives food on the first visit (with proof of income and residency). If living outside our service area, we work to refer the client to a food pantry operation in their area for the future.

Stone House Elementary School Back Pack Program – For several years PGO has enjoyed our relationship with Stone House Elementary School. The PTA provided a grant with which to purchase back packs for children needing food on the weekends. Each Friday these back packs are filled with food provided by PGO, the Girl Scouts, local food drives, and the generosity of members of the community. As of December 2015, seventeen families were participating. This means forty-nine children will have much needed food each weekend. We are honored to be a part of such a worthwhile program!
